The Road goes ever on and on; Down from the door where it began;
Now far ahead the Road has gone; And I must follow, if I can;
Pursuing it with eager feet; Until it joins some larger way;
Where many paths and errands met; And whither then? I cannot say.

A Good Recommendation, Humphrey

In a comment on my previous post Humphrey recommended a visit to the Marché Victor Hugo, an indoor food market in Toulouse, with restaurants on the first floor. As the entrance to the market happens to be about thirty seconds away from the entrance to our hotel, it would have been remiss not to have popped over.

It was absolutely bustling on the first floor when we arrived at around a quarter past one, and our choice of which eatery to visit was made on the basis that the first one at the top of the stairs had a table for 2 free and no queue. After lunch, by which time everything had quietened down remarkably, we perused the menus of the other establishments and decided that, by luck, we'd fallen into the very place we would have chosen had we made an informed decision. It was excellent - even if a misunderstanding did net Mick a half litre of wine rather than the intended glass. Trouper that he is, he soldiered on and got through it all.

starters, wine still quite full

mains, with an attempt to hide the fact that I'd started eating before thinking to take the photo; wine depleting

If you look carefully at Mick’s starter you'll see that it included whelks. Anyone who has seen the film Pretty Woman should remember the 'slippery little suckers' scene; Mick had his own version as he lost control of his whelk as he over-enthusiastically hoiked it out of its shell. Thankfully, the window next to us was closed, otherwise it would have hit the girl on the table on the balcony. Mick retrieved it from the floor and wiped the witness mark off the window.

We really have enjoyed some excellent food on this trip, far more so than last year. It's a wonder that both of us currently find ourselves skinnier than we've been in years (I suppose in Mick’s case the fact that he struggled to eat anything before noon for most of the trip, meaning he was eating far less than me, will have contributed to the weightloss).

By way of a bit of a random bonus photo, here's the lift in our hotel:

Inside it is of wooden construction and although big enough for four friendly people, it was fun cramming ourselves in with our backpacks upon arrival.

  1. I would be taking the stairs... As David is away and this is my bedtime reading, for a change, I shall be giggling as I try to nod off tonight, the image of those 'slippery little suckers' learning to fly, hahaha!!
